Dale Carnegie focuses primarily on
improving business and leadership skills, not spiritual or
religious topics. This is a private organization, founded around
1912, when Carnegie taught his first course. Dale Carnegie is best
known as the author of How to Win Friends and Influence
People, which was one of most popular books of the 20th
century. Over 50 million copies of Carnegie's books have been
printed to date.
Headquartered in Hauppauge, New York, the
organization operates in 75 nations and has franchises in most countries. These
franchises (numbering around 75 in the United States), are people classified as
independent contractors, trained by the worldwide headquarters. Each franchisee
in turn may have several “trainers” that they oversee. There are over 2,700
such trainers that offer the Carnegie program worldwide, in more than 25
languages (vs. 3,000 in 2006).
The basic Dale Carnegie Course is designed to
enable those who take it to be able to:
--Stretch their creative and performance abilities,
while expanding and improving
work habits and business skills.
--Tackle more issues, as well as issues with
greater complexity. Also, generate
more and better ideas.
--Excel in building consensus and leading the way.
--Implement and be a practitioner of the "Five
Drivers of Success."
--Identify and recognize personal breakthroughs,
and then create a plan to develop
them for themselves. Also, reduce
self-consciousness and fear.
--Practice the patterns of success and repeat them
for their continued improvement
--Communicate clearly and concisely, so they can
inspire those around them to action
A catalog is available that describes the courses.
The basic course spans 12 sessions, 3.5 hours per session, one session per week,
and the cost nationwide averages about $1,600. Tuition rates are determined
locally and can vary substantially. The company is accredited for continuing
education and for training.
Courses are offered to the general public, as
well as on-site for corporate groups. As industry demands public-speaking
prowess from executives, more companies are willing to pay for thorough
instruction, according to Dale Carnegie. The organization charges $1,600 for
its High Impact Presentations Program. The two-day seminar teaches executives
how to explain complex information by narrowing the subject to a few key points,
keeping language free of jargon, and using analogies to illustrate points.
It also covers high-pressure situations, such as
addressing striking workers, in which executives are reminded to anticipate
questions, prepare supporting evidence, and exercise neutral body language to
avoid appearing defensive. Also offered are 2-day seminars on sales management,
leadership and time management. The cost is $1,595. One-day seminars on public
speaking, motivation and cold calling are also offered. The cost for each
seminar is $199, for the general public, not companies.
Enrollment worldwide in all Dale Carnegie courses
numbers more than 150,000 annually, and the graduation percentage is 87%. About
7 million people are claimed to have been trained over the life of the
Institute.
A majority of those who are currently taking the
Dale Carnegie course are doing so outside the U.S. Management reports that U.S.
attendance for Dale Carnegie training domestically was about 60,000 people in
2005 and 2007.
In addition, the company launched a new
Corporate Solutions program in January. This program uses 2-hour “modules”
(100+) that can be customized for on-site training at a company, or at a Dale
Carnegie office. Main topic areas for this program include: sales effectiveness,
customer service, process improvement, presentation effectiveness, and
leadership development.
