Located in Boulder,
Colorado, the Naropa Institute is a private, nonprofit, Buddhist-inspired,
non-sectarian liberal arts university offering undergrad and graduate degrees in
the arts, social sciences, and the humanities. It was founded in 1974 by Chogyam
Trungpa, a Tibetan meditation master, scholar, author, and artist.
Naropa’s approach to
learning and philosophy is called "contemplative education." Through the
practices of meditation and other disciplines, students are encouraged to
acknowledge the direct moment-to-moment experiences of learning. By cultivating
awareness, learning is infused with insight and kindness for others. The
institute reports an enrollment of about 1,083 in 2007. Students range in age
from 18-60 years old.
The length of programs
varies from one-day workshops to four-week classes, to semester-long courses.
The workshops range in price from $10 for a short lecture to $480 for extended
classes. Bachelors of Arts degrees and certificates are offered in creative
arts, early childhood education, environmental studies, interdisciplinary
studies, religious studies, contemplative psychology, performance and music. The
tuition and fees for pursuing a Bachelors Degree is $20,738 per year. Masters
degrees are offered in: Buddhist studies, long-term care management,
contemplative psychotherapy, somatic psychology, transpersonal counseling
psychology, religious studies, creative writing, divinity, contemplative
education, environmental leadership and creation/spirituality. Tuition for a
Graduate Degree is $685per credit.
The beat poet Allen Ginsberg
was long associated with Naropa, having taught classes on the "Jack Kerouac
School of Disembodied Poets" in the 1970s. There is now an Allen Ginsberg
Library at the Naropa Institute.
