Lama Foundation is: a "community", a not-for profit organization, and a "spiritual home" to many. Their Mission is to be both a sustainable spiritual community as well as an educational center dedicated to all spiritual paths.

Situated about 20 miles north of Taos New Mecixo, on  110 acres at 8,600 feet, Lama Foundation is almost completely surrounded by Carson National Forrest, giving one the feeling of being  away from civilization. There are vistas, sunsets, pristine mountain-spring water, vegetarian cooking, and a wide variety of animals that share the mountain with the community.

Founded in 1967, Lama Foundation is one of the oldest Intentional Communities in America. It was founded as a place where high-level teachers could offer teachings in America, and evolved into a summer retreat center in the 1970's. A mountain fire in 1996 destroyed most of the buildings and surrounding forest, but re-building efforts and permaculture system design have brought about new buildings and new infrastructure.

There are two basic seasons on the annual calendar. The summer "open" season, which is generally late May through late September, and the winter "closed" season which is the rest of the year. In the summer, the community averages about 30 people consisting of residents, summer stewards, summer-retreatants who enroll in summer programs, hermits, and visitors.

Programs may include:Dance of Universal Peace, an African drumming session, a Japanese Tea Ceremony, weekly Shabbat service, Kundalini yoga at sunrise, a 3am during an all-night chant, or hiking alone in the mountains.

Retreat fees and long-term program fees include tuition (except those retreats that include “dana” -- contributions whereby the teacher receives only the retreatant’s donations as honorarium), meals, and camping. Dormitory fees are additional and must be reserved to guarantee a place. Car camping is available, space permitting, and also requires reservations to guarantee a space.

This facility accommodates retreats of up to 125 people, though typical retreats are considerably more intimate. We have a modern kitchen and each day we offer three vegetarian meals prepared lovingly from scratch, snacks, and a wide assortment of coffee and teas. Most people sleep in a tenting area. A good waterproof tent is essential, as is a sleeping bag good to 40 degrees F. There is  limited dormitory space available by reservations in yurts furnished with mattresses; please bring your own bedding or sleeping bag
